One thing I have always hated is a list. I’m not a lister. And because of that I’m the world’s worst grocery shopper, packer, and organizer. Lists limit me. And they’re boring. There’s no room for surprise or mystery in a list. It’s just all there, waiting for you to read and do and eventually cross off so that you can start all over again.
Teaching has taught me that there’s sanity to be found in lists. And that sometimes, they aren’t all bad. Sometimes. Lately, I’ve been on a list kick. Because really.. they save time. And they are rational. And the rational side of me likes being efficient and productive. But the creative, free side of me still despises them a little. Just a little.
I really missed being with my family today. And so while I was sitting on the couch, I doodled this list. Just for you. Listing my day made it easier to pretend that you're close.
The list of Today:
-wake up six minutes before my alarm
-squeak at the cold air
-brush for the full three minutes
-step outside and run back in to put on tights
-make it to Starbucks
-get a few good kicks in at recess
-read Mrs. Piggle Wiggle
-receive the sweetest note. ever.
-sit at a meeting and hate the window
-grade papers
-drive home with the window down
-NCIS
-open the refrigerator door seven times
-eat a bagel (that’s for you, mom)
-research butternut squash recipes
-look at places to go this weekend
-contemplate a Walmart run
-cringe at the thought of Walmart
-Consider getting dressed up for Walmart
-Walmart thoughts become low of the day
-miss home
-make rice krispie treats
-look outside and then at my running shoes
-frown at the crumbs on my counter and books on the floor
-panic about the overdue book from the library
-grab my keys and head for the return slot
-run back inside for a hat and scarf
-wish on the way to the car that you were all here to live my listed life with me.
